The Beginning...

Dear Family and Friends,

Some of you have heard this and others- it will be a complete shock. There is some disturbing news I need to share with you. On Feb. 18, 2008 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have undergone many tests- mammograms, ultrasounds, MRI, CAT and Bone scans. As far as my doctors can tell, the cancer is primarily contained in the breast, but likely to be found in the surrounding lymph nodes. This is typical- and treatment will be the same whether or not it's in the lymph nodes. I will begin chemotherapy at the end of next week and most likely every 3 weeks thereafter. Surgery will be further down the road, probably at the end of summer.

We are currently staying local, but have had consultation by a family member at MD Anderson at the University of Texas. He is a docotor at the cancer clinic and also Professor of Radiology (Peter Dempsey- cousin of Katie). MD Anderson is rated #1 in the country for cancer care, so we really trust and value his opinion. He is happy- so far with the way things are going, so that certainly puts me at ease. We will also go to another source(through my brother-in-law, Steve) at Mayo where he has a contact- a leader in breast cancer at Mayo in Jacksonville, FL. I have been flooded with names and recommendations, and Dave and I are just trying to keep it simple with the best. We have been very pleased with my surgeon and oncologist here in Barrington, and they passed Julie's test :)

I was in disbelief and saddened, but am now encouraged by the oncologist and surgeon. They are very positive that I will recover. It will be a rough year ahead. I thank you ahead for your encouragement, understanding and prayers.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. JAMES I:I2

My love,
Sara

Sara,

You're one of the strongest and most determined women I know. 20+ years of friendship have shown me what a spectacular person you are. (although I knew the moment I met you that you were someone special.)

I love you!
